A Pilates instructor went viral on TikTok for saying people over 200 lbs shouldn’t do pilates.  The now deleted post got lots of attention, and succulentaddict8 has since posted a teary eyed apology (link).  I can’t believe we’re still having these conversations.  Great responses here here here here and here.

I enjoyed this cute reel.  I love making my students groan with my evil class plans. 😈

📰 In the News

Nervous about attending a new fitness class? So are a lot of folks.  This author asks herself “Does my Pilates instructor hate me?” (The Cut) after describing an uncomfortable experience in her first class.  I’m not surprised at the snobby-ness described in this article.  It goes right along with the Pilates Princess trend, and frankly, is probably one of the big reasons people like succulentaddict8 mentioned above are empowered to spew BS about people in their classes.  Can we find other ways to build community besides straight up exclusion?

💰️ Pilates Biz

Anthony Geisler talks about his next fitness franchise. You might remember him as the CEO of XPonential Fitness who boasted that their Club Pilates brand had never closed a store, which later turned out to be not just false, but an active internal strategy to cover up failed locations read about the ongoing lawsuit at Bloomberg ($).

Aldi’s $199 Pilates reformer is coming back May 25th!  Joining dozens (if not hundreds) of budget options, the fact that the grocery brand is bringing it back (it previously sold out in Australia last year) is a testament to the growing popularity and awareness of Pilates.

I’m teaching another round of intro to the reformer classes at the Y next week and summarized my 6 strategies for converting newbies into lifers in my latest blog.  (Spoiler: It doesn’t involve perfect form).

🔎 Research and Tech

A new meta analysis shows that a regular Pilates practice can help shorten labor and reduce labor pain. The authors explain that one reason Pilates is effective is due to “the emphasis on strengthening the core and pelvic floor muscles can enhance neuromuscular control…”  One study they examined also showed a reduction in post-partum pain, also.
